Job Description
The Cargo Agent manages and coordinates the transportation, handling, and documentation of freight shipments across air, sea, and land terminals. This role includes overseeing logistics operations, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards, and maintaining accurate shipment records. Cargo Agents collaborate with freight forwarders, customs officials, and other transportation professionals to ensure goods are delivered efficiently, on time, and in excellent condition.
Typical duties and responsibilities- Coordinate the arrival and departure of cargo shipments, ensuring timely and efficient processing of all shipments.
- Manage all documentation and paperwork related to cargo shipments, including customs declarations, bills of lading, and shipping manifests.
- Oversee the loading and unloading of cargo from aircraft, ships, and trucks, ensuring proper handling, safe stowage, and adherence to procedures.
- Conduct inspections to identify damage, discrepancies, or irregularities in cargo and report findings to the relevant authorities.
- Liaise with customs officials to facilitate smooth cargo clearance, ensuring import and export regulations compliance.
- Collaborate with freight forwarders, shipping companies, and other logistics providers to arrange transportation and ensure seamless delivery of goods.
- Address and resolve missing, delayed, or damaged cargo issues by coordinating with relevant parties for efficient solutions.
- Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports for all cargo activities, including shipment documentation and inventory records.
- Assist customers with inquiries about cargo status, pricing, and available services.
- Ensure proper labeling, packaging, and cargo preparation for transport in line with regulations and company policies.
- Work with warehouse teams to ensure cargo is properly stored, handled, and organized before shipment.
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required, with further education in logistics, supply chain management, or a related field considered a strong advantage.
- Candidates should have 1–3 years of proven experience in cargo operations, freight forwarding, or a similar logistics role.
- A strong understanding of cargo handling procedures, shipping documentation, and safety regulations across air, sea, and land transportation is essential.
- Basic knowledge of customs processes, international trade regulations, and compliance standards is necessary.
- Proficiency in cargo management software, databases, and shipment tracking systems is required, with familiarity with tools such as CargoWise or SAP considered a plus.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential, with the ability to effectively collaborate with clients, customs officials, and internal teams.
- Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills are needed to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- The ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven work environment while maintaining efficiency and accuracy is critical.
- Knowledge of health and safety protocols related to cargo handling and transportation is required.
- Physical stamina to perform manual labor, including lifting and moving heavy cargo as needed, is necessary.
- Fluency in English is essential, and additional language skills are a valuable asset, particularly in diverse or international business environments.
