Purpose of Job:
To work as a financial planner providing proactive and comprehensive financial
planning advice and support to the clients of ScotiaMcLeod (SM).

Major Accountabilities:

  1. Provide Financial Planning expertise to Wealth Advisors with a view to combining external client need and business building by:
  • Preparing financial plans including data gathering, preparing and presenting comprehensive financial plans to the client in a defined geographic or office location. Key tasks of the position include:
i. Gathering key pertinent data and information about the client
ii. Preparing the financial plan
iii. Analyzing and reviewing the financial plan with the wealth advisor/primary relationship manager and other Team of Experts members to ensure that it is congruent with the client's specific needs
iv. Presenting the financial plan to the client
v. Following up with the WA on their implementation of the financial plan.
  • Providing ongoing, professional financial planning advice and strategies to clients of the SM Branch
  • Collaborate with other business lines - Team of Experts (TOE) to gather assets, uncover cross- referral opportunities and ensure an integrated approach to planning is being adhered to. (Insurance, Private Banking, Estate)
  • Facilitate client workshops and seminars on various financial planning topics

  1. Contribute to the effective functioning of the SM team by:
  • Tracking plan data and results from plans created
  • Maintain financial planning professional practice standards including training, development and codes of conduct.
  • Participating actively in team learning development activities and team performance achievements.
  • Building effective working relationships across the team and with various business lines and corporate function contacts.
  • Maintaining a high level of customer service
  • Facilitating a culture of open and honest communication
  • Actively participate and contribute to touch bases and team meetings
  • Encouraging the generation of new ideas and approaches
  • Actively share knowledge and experience to enhance the development of all team members
  • Developing and executing a meaningful employee development plan

Education/Work Experience/Designations
Required :
  • University degree
  • Accredited financial planning designation (CFP, RFP, PFP)
  • Minimum 2 years' experience as a financial planner
  • Understanding of the comprehensive financial planning process including investments, asset protection, retirement, estate planning, cash management and tax issues
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Working knowledge of each Wealth Management Business Line's value proposition
  • Working knowledge of the full Wealth Management product and service offering in order to identify pportunities across the Team of Experts
  • Basic knowledge of the products and services offered by the Scotiabank Group of Companies (external to Wealth Management) in order to identify and refer clients as appropriate
  • Naviplan experience
Desirables :
  • Canadian Securities Course
  • Life Insurance license
  • Professional designation (CA, CMA, CGA, LLB)
  • Additional estate and/or tax courses
Working Conditions:
  • The role operates within a standard office environment.
  • The position may require occasional travel to meet client needs
